Check All Platforms at OnceWhat is a Google Sites handle?
When you create a site with New Google Sites, you choose a handle that becomes part
of your site's public URL:
sites.google.com/view/yourhandle.
This handle is the address you share with anyone you want to visit your Google Site.
Every Google account can create a free site, and the handle you pick is unique across
all Google Sites created with personal Google accounts.
Google Sites is a free website builder included with every Google account. Because
it is hosted directly on Google's infrastructure and lives at
sites.google.com,
pages published on Google Sites carry the full trust and authority that Google extends
to its own domains. This makes Google Sites one of the most powerful free tools for
parasite SEO: a well-optimized Google Site can rank on the first page of Google
search results for competitive keywords, often faster than an independent website
with years of history.
Google Sites URL formats explained
Google Sites has three URL formats depending on when and how a site was created. Only the first format is available for new sites created today.
sites.google.com/view/handle/
The default format for all personal Google accounts today. This is the format this checker verifies.
sites.google.com/site/handle/
The old format (pre-2021). Google no longer allows new sites to be created with this URL pattern. Existing classic sites remain live.
sites.google.com/domain.com/handle/
Sites created with a Google Workspace (business or school) account. The handle namespace is scoped to the organization domain, not shared with personal accounts.
Google Sites handle rules
- â Length: Between 2 and 63 characters (the DNS label limit).
- â Allowed characters: Lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and hyphens (-). Uppercase letters, underscores, dots, and spaces are not permitted.
- â Lowercase only: Google Sites handles are always lowercase. Entering uppercase letters when creating a site converts them to lowercase automatically.
- â Hyphens only as separators: Unlike many social platforms, Google Sites does not allow underscores. Hyphens are the only permitted separator for multi-word handles.
- â Handle changes: Google Sites does allow handle changes, but the old URL will not redirect to the new one. Any links shared publicly or indexed by Google pointing to the old URL will break immediately.

â
Custom domain: You can connect a custom domain to a Google Site from within Google Domains or your domain registrar's DNS settings. The
sites.google.com/view/handleURL remains active alongside the custom domain.
Tips for choosing a Google Sites handle
best-accounting-software or mybrand-review can rank faster than a brand name alone because the keyword is in the URL itself.sites.google.com/view/yourbrand is worthwhile brand protection given how well Google Sites ranks.my-brand-review signals three separate words to the search algorithm. A hyphenated handle that contains your target keyword phrase is both more readable and more SEO-effective than a single run-on word. Why Google Sites is one of the most powerful free SEO platforms
Google Sites ranks on Google because it is hosted by Google. There is no other platform where the ranking engine and the hosting provider are the same company. This creates a trust signal that no third-party domain can replicate: Google inherently trusts pages hosted on its own infrastructure, and that trust translates into search visibility that would take years to build on an independent domain.
sites.google.com inherits this authority directly, giving new pages an immediate ranking advantage that independent sites take years to build.Frequently asked questions
Yes. You can run up to 5 checks per day at no cost. Each check can include up to 5 handles at once, giving you 25 Google Sites handle checks per day in total.
Very accurate for the New Google Sites format. Google Sites returns standard HTTP status codes reliably: a 200 response means a site exists at that handle, and a 404 means the handle is not in use. A result of "Unknown" means the check could not be completed, usually due to a temporary network issue, and you should verify by visiting the URL directly.
No. This checker only covers New Google Sites (sites.google.com/view/handle). Classic Google Sites (sites.google.com/site/handle) is a legacy format that Google no longer allows for new sites. Even if a classic handle appears available, you cannot create a new site using that format.
Yes. You can change a site's handle from the site settings within Google Sites. However, the old URL will not redirect to the new one. Any links pointing to the old URL, including any that Google has already indexed, will return a 404 error after the change. If you have built any SEO value through the old URL, changing the handle will forfeit that ranking history.
Yes. Google Sites supports custom domain mapping through your domain registrar's DNS settings. You point a CNAME record at Google's servers, and your site becomes accessible at your own domain (e.g. landing.yourbrand.com). The original sites.google.com/view/handle URL remains active alongside the custom domain.
For short-term ranking speed on competitive keywords, a Google Site has a significant advantage because of the inherited domain authority from google.com. However, for long-term brand building, a self-hosted website on your own domain is always the stronger investment because every backlink and ranking accrues to your own domain rather than to Google's. The most effective approach is to use both: a Google Site to capture SERP real estate quickly, with links pointing back to your primary domain.
